Background/Purpose: This study analyzed types of work schedules of Korean elderly and examines the daily schedule of men and women by focusing on perspective of ‘productive ageing’ in terms of change of roles that the elderly were called upon to perform by society in the United States. From the 1970s, society were started to stigmatize as dependency and social burden, and elderly were demanded forcibly to take the role of producer especially to elderly group. Korean society is notorious for a high rate of elderly poverty (48.6%). So that a number of elderly must be forced to the labor market. It is said that Korean elderly tends to work not just to sustain stable life but ‘survive’ for the rest of his or her life due to deficient public pension and social security or so.

Methods: We use the 2014 Korea Time Use Survey dataset for the analysis(2,131 households).  The study used sequence analysis in particular, by applying the Lesnard (2014) dynamic hamming matching (DHM). And the cluster analysis was performed to derive the types of elderly household work schedule. After naming each type by considering the subject labor, amount and allocation of labor, the study further conducted multi-nominal logistic regression analysis to show the general characteristics according to types of household work schedule.

Results: As a result of categorizing according to work-time type, this study could deduct 5 types of elderly household as follows. First, (E.1) male and female shift type, which shows the irregular, broken sleeping hours of spouse and the time table for passive activities. Second, (E.2) male and female long-hour type. Unpaid family worker, Self-employed are included in this type, conversion into other activities occurs rarely even the interaction time of family members. Third, (E.3) The male long hour type. (E.4) The female long hour type is shown through the analysis. Bereaved, women who has an ill spouse were belong to here, working condition is considerably low comparing with other types. (E.5) The non-working type has very short working hours of 3.1 for men and 1 hours for women. This group of family sharing and leisure time if over four hours. However, the polarization of wealth in this group make their life correspondence very differently.

Conclusions and Implications: Based on the results, this study suggested ¨çpractical policy implementation for the bereaved women who are economically vulnerable ¨èapproval for additional labor wage especially for poor elderly without taking off of the public supplement transfer, ¨éformulation of unpaid female care work in Korean society context. Theoretically, this study facilitated convergence of empirical observation and the social policy field by approaching the perspective of productivity ageing through work time and further illustrated the importance of time allocation.
