This workshop proposal outlines a three-year Practitioner Education in Substance Use and Misuse Program (Prac-Ed) funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The presenters will discuss the rationale for designing a Substance Use Disorder Experiential Training Program for Social Work students. The aim is to develop an evidence-based model to integrate into the social work curriculum to equip students with the skills needed to practice effectively in Substance Abuse and Addictions prevention treatment. The presenters walk through the implementation process of this program. During year 1, CSWE partnered with 22 schools with accredited social work programs to pilot the standardized curriculum based on competencies from CSWEs Substance Use Curricular Guide. The institutions that participated in the first year represent diversity in geography, size, and type of program. Some of the outputs include a full SUD course, two plug-and-play modules to be used more broadly throughout the social work curriculum regardless of specialization or area of focus. The presenters will walk attendees through the performance measurement at multiple levels of evaluation including number of participants, evaluation of training, faculty learning, and student competency. In year 2-3 revised and enhanced the standardized curriculum based on experience and feedback received from the year 1 sample. Ten additional schools were selected through a competitive process to integrate the revised curriculum, resulting a total of 32 total schools of social work participating in Year 2. The year 2 sample were schools that have limited to no substance use curricula in place and they were trained and mentored by Year 1 faculty. This provided for the expansion and enhancement of a standardized SUD curriculum in social work programs across the United States. Performance measurements were assessed at multiple levels of evaluation. Some of the year 2 outputs include: 1) Recovery to Practice Series, 2) Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Project - The Social Work and Integrated Care Project, 3) Incorporating SBIRT Into Social Work Curriculum, and 4) Women, Risky Drinking and Alcohol-exposed Pregnancies: A Framework for Field Instructors. Further, presenters will discuss the newly launched Substance Use Disorders Education and Leadership Scholars (SUDEALS) Program, a two-year pilot funded by SAMHSA and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. The SUDEALS Program includes a learning cohort of 10 accredited social work programs, including students and field instructors, that implement the standardized SUD resources to cultivate a cohort of social work leaders in SUD through learning and scholarship opportunities. Preliminary findings on Year 1 of the pilot will be shared. The workshop will conclude with lessons learned and future considerations. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and answers.
