Social work research is witnessing a methodological revolution with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) large linguistic models (LLM). This workshop focuses on practical applications of LLMs in social research methodology. Through a systematic review combined with interviews with experts in AI and social research methodology, we delve into the skill of LLMs in impacting the research process, from study design to the complexities of data analysis.

The systematic review records the cutting-edge integration of LLMs into existing research paradigms, while our dialogues with field practitioners illuminate their tangible effectiveness, emerging challenges, and prospective horizons of AI in research.

The pedagogical approach of the workshop will use illustrative case studies and participatory exercises that highlight the application of AI in social research. By building a collaborative learning environment, participants will be guided on study designs with AI in mind, data collection and analysis strategies that are complemented by AI tools, enabling the ability to navigate and use LLM.

Providing a roadmap to integrate LLMs and foster innovative, evidence-based research, enabling the full potential of AI to be harnessed to continue developing social work knowledge that promotes transformative practices while maintaining an unwavering commitment to the principles ethics in a landscape of rapid digitalization.

Concluding with a discussion where we will navigate the ethical crossroads posed by the integration of AI in social work research, fostering a dialogue that critically reflects on the balance between innovation and the moral imperatives inherent to the social work profession, debating the implications of AI on issues such as data management and safeguarding privacy, keeping in mind that the progression towards the digital era is in a conscious and principled way.
