We present the development and implementation of a practitioner podcast series designed to reframe research as a practical and empowering tool. Drawing from interviews with 17 diverse social work practitioners, the podcasts highlight real-world practice dilemmas that were resolved through the application of research methods. Each episode follows a consistent structure: (1) career and practice overview, (2) an in-depth case of research-informed decision-making, and (3) practical advice for students wary of research.
Used as a central instructional tool in research courses across two universities, these podcasts have been integrated into assignments, reflective exercises, and competency assessments. Preliminary findings from a mixed methods study including survey data and focus groups indicate that the podcasts enhance students' understanding of the relevance of research, increase engagement, and foster a more positive orientation toward research as a core element of professional social work practice.
Workshop participants will learn how to incorporate similar tools in their own courses, explore sample podcast excerpts, and engage in dialogue about best practices for making research methods instruction more relevant and accessible. By showcasing research as a practice-based skill, this approach offers a transformative strategy for cultivating research competence and confidence in future social workers.
