In 2018, an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine was formed to examine the potential for integrating services addressing social needs and the social determinants of health into the delivery of health care to achieve better health outcomes. The committee’s report, Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care: Moving Upstream to Improve the Nation’s Health, was released in September 2019. The reports key findings and recommendations will be reviewed, especially those that explicitly or implicitly emphasize the need for research to advance true integration.
